Worried about a Child?
Types of abuse can fall into these categories:
- Physical;
- domestic;
- sexual;
- modern slavery;
- self-neglect;
- emotional or psychological;
- financial or material;
- discriminatory;
- organisational or institutional;
- neglect or acts of omission.
If whilst working with a child you become concerned by what they say, what you observe (including marks on their body) or by changes in their behaviour, report these concerns to Claire the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
Do not attempt to question the children yourself and never interrogate them or put words into their mouth.
Disclosure of Abuse by a child:
It is important that you know what to do in such an eventuality.
- However you are feeling inside, outwardly appear calm and in control.
- Listen to what is being said without displaying shock or disbelief.
- Accept what is being said.
- Allow the child to talk freely, listen rather than ask direct questions,
- DO NOT interrogate or ask leading questions
- Re-assure the child, but DO NOT make promises that can’t be kept.
- DO NOT promise confidentiality
- Explain to the child that they have done the right thing by talking and that you can help by telling the people that need to know and are trained to help.
- Re-assure the child that it is not their fault.
- Record details of the disclosure immediately. It doesn’t matter what you write it on. Include where possible the exact words or phrases used by the child. Sign and date the record.
- Report your concerns and give your records to the DSL (Claire Hughes) or Deputy DSL (Kate Storey)
- Do not bottle up your own feelings – talk to the DSL about it.
- Do not disclose details of a confidential nature to others.
E-Safety
Always be careful when you are using the internet. It can help you to keep in touch with your friends and help your education – but it can also cause harm – to you and to others.
Remember help is always available if you are having any problems online.
Don’t be afraid to talk to your parents, carers or an adult at Woodland Nurture.
If you or anyone you know is worried about Child Exploitation, Online Protection or anything related to Internet safety please click the link below which will take you to the CEOP reporting website:

Tips for staying safe online:
- Make sure you keep new online friends strictly online. If someone you don’t know asks to be your online friend you must ensure an adult knows about it.
- Know how to use the CEOP Button and how to report it to the CEOP Centre if you are concerned about someone’s online behaviour towards you.
